Winter: A Visual Appreciation
Every year my photos shift from bright and colorful to white and gray as the summer transitions to fall and then winter. But nature in winter is no less beautiful even though the color palette is more limited. And to prove it, here is a collection of my favorite Winter photos...
“I prefer winter and fall, when you feel the bone structure of the landscape. Something waits beneath it; the whole story doesn’t show.”
- Andrew Wyeth
Howling wind, black night winter storm - the world is ice. Inside, the fire is warm.
“It helps to think more like chickadees. Instead of fleeing cold winters like so many of their avian cousins, these indomitable little birds adapt to the season by caching food, sleeping at night in tiny holes made by woodpeckers, and even lowering their body temperatures in a type of controlled hypothermia. One thing that doesn’t change with the seasons, though is the chickadee’s spiritedness. I’m still surprised when I hear their impossibly cheerful calls during swirling snowstorms and on winter’s coldest mornings. It’s a sound that coaxes me outdoors, reminding me that even though nature looks and feels different right now, I can find ways to adapt and thrive too.”

And the chickadees aren’t the only ones braving the cold…
Do you spend time outdoors in the winter or prefer to stay cozy inside?

Good work! I do like to go out in the winter, but don't very often.
Wonderful collection Kris. I'm living a lot of this in the greater Chicago area so at times it can be hard to step back and see the beauty when it can also be an inconvenience, but you've done so here.
